Physiotherapy for Movement Disorders

Movement disorders are conditions that affect movement and motor function such as walking, balance, coordination and posture. Movement disorders may include:
  • Partial or complete paralysis of muscles
  • Decreased range of movement
  • Jerky movement
  • Slow or rigid movement
  • Difficulty with gross or fine motor skills
  • Decreased balance
Physiotherapy treatment will improve muscles strength, joint range of movement and help make movement more fluid and accurate by increasing your confidence with activities.

Physiotherapy will be centred around:
  • Exercise to increase muscle strength based around daily tasks.
  • Activities to improve balance and reduce the risk of falling.
  • Exercise to improve control of the head, trunk, legs and arms.
  • Advice about posture in lying sitting and standing to increase comfort and reduce pain.
  • Repetition, cueing and movement strategies to reduce the effects of freezing.
  • Activities to teach you new ways of doing ways making functional activities and movements easier to achieve.
  • Repetitive movement to stimulate pathways to the brain and improve accuracy of movement.
  • Exercise to increase stamina and reduce fatigue.
  • Relaxation therapy and hydrotherapy to relax tight muscles.
Movement disorders affect people in different ways. Neurological physiotherapy treatment will be tailored around your needs and goals in order that you achieve your maximum physical potential. Physiotherapy treatment will improve your mobility and capacity with activities important to you.
